Advice Forum Friday

Wow, y'all, it's Friday already. YIKES!

Okay, here's what I want you to talk to me about today - Carpal Tunnel.

Please.

This stupid right hand of mine is killing me, y'all! During the day it's totally tolerable; it just goes numb and tingles a lot.

But Bed Time? Is a whole new world. I'm tellin' you, it's driving me crazy! My hand hurts, it goes to sleep, it throbs, it burns, it tingles, it swells...can you feel my pain?

So - first of all, how many of my lovely readers have this problem? And if you do (or if you know someone who does), what's your secret weapon? I'm looking for any and all suggestions right now - exercises, braces, sleeping positions, drugs...ANYTHING.

And yes, I'm gonna go to the doctor, but I keep having to reschedule.

Thanks, guys, I knew I could count on you!

And if you post a question at your blog, be sure to sign the Mr. Linky down below so we can find you!

Ohh, Lori, that stinks!

You might try squeezing a stress ball to build up muscles.
Carpal tunnel is basically a repetitive stress injury (like tennis elbow, but for keyboarders).

I've found that using one of those keyboards that is ergonomic and split (they are kind of weird looking) helps a lot, as does a wrist rest.

But, what I think will work better, would be to take supplements/change your diet to an anti-inflammatory one, to allow your body to heal itself. Let me know if you want more info on this, it's kinda long and boring for a combox.

Hope you feel better!

Back when I was decorating cakes on a daily basis, I suffered from this - it was awful. I wore a brace and it definitely did help.
Occassionally I'll have "flare ups" now - it will just start to bother me. Amazingly enough, my chiropractor is the one who helps me. He uses the activator method - and he can pinpoint where he needs to adjust by me doing a few moves with my hand. He clicks his little tool on my wrist, hand, elbow (wherever it needs to be done) and it won't bother me again for a while. It is wonderful!

You can learn more about this method and even see if there's a dr. in your area that uses this method at www.activator.com

(And on my Dr's page - my booty is featured! LOL! Seriously, I was used in the photo - but you can't tell it's me because you can only see my backside!)

Anyway, it's something to consider - it really works for me! He even adjusts my jaw for my TMJ - I would be miserable otherwise!

I feel for you. My mom has it in both hands. She has used Aleve, which helped for awhile, and she wore a "brace" of sorts on her hand, but it didn't really help. She is having surgery on her right hand next week. I hope you are able to find something to help you.

Oh no! Fortunately, this problem doesn't plague me! Take care of yourself.

What I thought was carpal tunnel actual turne dout to be: DeQuervain's tenosynovitis - characterized by the tendon sheath swelling in the tendons of the thumb. (also known as cornhusker's syndrome -- I think --from the repetitive motion in shucking corn??) You can tell the difference in where it hurts in your hand. Carpalk tunnel runs from the tendon in the middle of your wrist straight upwards... mine ran from there and kind of gravitated towards my thumb...

A splint/brace helped me wonderfully!
